Motion Sickness
Practical measures designed to ameliorate motion sickness in children when traveling
In cars and buses:
- Enable children to see the outside environment in the direction of travel. Children's car seats can be used to elevate their position.
- If possible, instruct children to fix their vision on a stable reference point, such as the horizon.
- Children should avoid reading or engaging in games that require continual changes in visual fixation.
- Children should avoid unnecessary head movements.
- Traveling at night or the use of dark sunglasses during the day may reduce visual stimulation and motion sickness.
- Encourage susceptible children to sleep or sit near the centre of the vehicle in a reclining position with the eyes closed.
- In cars and buses, instruct children to imitate the driver and lean into the direction of the turn.
- Prepare light meals for children; avoid heavy, greasy meals.
- Avoid unpleasant odors and ensure adequate ventilation.
- Stop and allow children to walk about at adequate intervals.
On occasion, Dramamine can help if recommended by your pediatrician.
