Yeast Infections ( Diaper Candidiasis
)
What is Candidiasis ?
Candidiasis is a fungal infection affecting the diaper area. It is almost always the
result of irritation and maceration from urine,stool and moisture under the diapers. Such a situation allows the fungus to overgrow. It usually takes 2-3 days for a fungal infection to develop after an initial episode of diaper irritation.
How does it present?
Redness, swelling, small red lumps with pus or tiny blisters (satellite lesions) can be seen around the groins, anus, upper thighs and buttocks.
How is Candidiasis treated?
The condition responds very well to antifungal creams (Lotrimin). Proper skin care of the diaper area like keeping dry is important for prevention. The liberal use of powders should be
discouraged.
