What's Going Around?

Update January,2009

1- "Stomach flu" - Two varieties: Acute onset vomiting and belly pain begins to lessen after 6 hours. Also:  Vomiting and Diarrhea 5 to 7 times a day for 1-3 days.  Please see Questions and Answers tab above for more information.

2-Sore throats and fevers - If these symptoms are associated with impressive runny nose, and cough, then it is probably viral and has to run its course over 7 to 10 days.  Some kids do have fever with this. Everyone with it feels lousy for at least 3 days. If the sore throat is associated with headache, stomach aches and not much cough or runny nose then consider scheduling an appointment to rule out a Strep Throat infection. If your child feels sicker after 3 days of illness, make an appointment for evaluation.

3-Bronchiolitis-nasal and chest congestion often fever.  Most severe in children under 3 years old. Click Question and Answer Tab then Bronchiolitis for more info.

3- Spring 2008 Swimmer's Ear Update. Click Here

4- Allergies.  For more info on managing allergies in kids Click Here

RULES TO LIVE BY:

1.  If your child has a fever greater than 100.5 F then they must stay home until that fever is gone at least 24 hours without medication.

2.  If your child has vomiting and/or diarrhea then they must stay home until 24 hours after the last episode, fever is gone and they are eating a normal diet.

3.  Children with conjunctivitis ("Pink Eye") must stay home until the redness is gone for 24 hours (some schools/daycares will accept them if they have been on medication for 24 hours).

4.  In the absence of the above symptoms, if your child feels sick: can rest without electronics, isn't eating or drinking well then keep them home for 24 hours and let them rest.
